What is Emergency Eyecare?

Emergency or urgent eye care is immediate medical attention to treat anything that can cause permanent damage to your vision and eyes.  Urgent care visits are usually scheduled the same day or within 24-48 hours.

When to seek Emergency Eyecare

Even seemingly minor problems can have long term effects on your eyesight. If you experience any sudden vision loss, significant eye pain, foreign object(s) in your eye(s), sudden onset of flashes or floaters, swelling on or around your eye(s), corneal surface scratch/abrasion, significant discharge from your eye(s), any injury to the eye, we recommend you calling or texting us ASAP at (XXX) XXX-XXXX for further guidance and to help you schedule an appointment for urgent care at our office in Oakland.

Managing Common Eye Emergencies

Foreign Body in the Eye

A foreign body or object can be an eyelash or piece of metal from welding. If you get any foreign bodies embedded in your eye, do not rub your eye and attempt to remove these objects yourself. You can end up with sight-threatening complications if you do not know how to safely remove it. If you have loose debris or object trapped between your eye and your eyelid, you may attempt to safely remove it by flushing your eye with saline solution or clean cold water for a few minutes. Regardless the type of object, it is critical to have it removed right away to reduce your risk of serious injury or infection. Contact us to for further medical attention.

Corneal Abrasions

A corneal abrasion or scratch on the surface of your eye can be painful and leave your eye vulnerable to infection. If you experience a corneal abrasion, do not rub your eye. Get in touch with our office for further medical attention.

Chemicals in the Eye

For chemical exposure and contact, immediately flush your eyes with copious amounts of clean cold water or saline solution for at least 15 minutes and call us immediately for emergency care. A chemical burn can quickly cause significant permanent damage to your eye and result in vision loss.

How does Emergency Eyecare Improve your Visual Health?

Even seemingly minor injuries or illnesses damage your eyes and have long-term effects on your eyesight. Prompt treatment makes it easier to treat the injury or illness so that it doesn’t cause permanent damage to your eyes. Most conditions are easier to remedy the earlier you begin your treatment.

What are the benefits of Emergency Eyecare?

There are several benefits of seeking emergency or urgent eye care with an optometrist in Oakland:

Avoid a visit to the emergency room.

There is a misconception that eye emergencies require a visit to the emergency room. Common eye emergencies like corneal abrasions and embedded foreign bodies can be treated by our optometrist. And if you are not sure if your symptoms require emergency or urgent care, contact us anyways for further assistance. However, if you think you need to go to the emergency room, do not delay and go ASAP.

Preserve your eyesight.

You only have two eyes. Waiting to receive treatment can put you at risk of serious complications that can result in vision loss.

Alleviate ocular pain and discomfort. Reduce your recovery time.

The sooner you seek medical care for your eye, the faster your eye can begin healing. Unfortunately, eye inflammation and injuries are associated with pain, swelling, discharge, and other undesirable symptoms. Seeking immediate medical attention treatment helps reduce  these unpleasant symptoms as quickly as possible. Eye issues that receive prompt treatment are less likely to require invasive, time-consuming management.

Note: Urgent care visits are medical eye exam appointments. To reduce any misunderstandings with regards to insurance coverage, we recommend reaching out to us before your visit to get an estimated quote, as most vision insurances do not cover medical eye exam appointments.
