What is Lid Hygiene and Cleansing?

It is a simple process to remove crusty dandruff like flakes, oils, bacterial biofilm, outdoor debris, old makeup, and lash extension build up along the base of the eyelashes and lid margins.

What to expect

We use a handheld tool to gently exfoliate the lid margins with cleansers that are safe for the eyes. While you may experience a tickling feeling, the procedure should not be painful. You can maintain your results between visits by using eyelid scrub products recommended by our Optometrists. You can also use a warm wash cloth to gently cleanse your eyelid margins. Even if you’re vigilant with your eyelid hygiene regimen, an in-office lid cleansing can help remove the stubborn biofilm that cannot be easily removed by at-home techniques.

How often to schedule your eyelid cleanings

We encourage our patients to schedule an eyelid cleansing every 4-6 months or as needed for maintenance.

How do Lid Hygiene and Cleansings improve your visual health?

Bacterial toxins or biofilm can build up along the base of our eyelashes, which can leading to the development of blepharitis. Blepharitis is lid inflammation that results in ocular discomfort and symptoms of unsightly swollen, red, itchy, flaky, scaly skin around our eyes. If left unmanaged, it can often cause lid infections and clogged lid oil glands known as styes. Styes are “pimples” of the eyelid and they can be painful and uncomfortable. When the eyelid margins are irritated, rough and swollen, it can rub against the surface the eye, cause more surface inflammation and reduce your quality of vision. Imagine old wipers creating friction and streaks across the windshield of a car. Hence, daily eyelid hygiene and cleansings are integral for keeping your eyes healthy and vision clear.

What are the benefits of Lid Hygiene and Cleansings?

There are multiple benefits associated with proper eyelid hygiene and regular eyelid cleanings:

  • Maintain healthy lids and lashes for whiter and brighter eyes

  • Decrease uncomfortable symptoms of dry eyes and allergic conjunctivitis

  • Reduce risk of eye infections

  • Improve comfort with contact lens wear
