Causes and Care for Red Eyes
What causes Red Eyes?
A red eye occurs when something causes the white areas of your eyes to appear red or pink. A red eye can tell us a variety of different things and proper treatment can vary depending on the cause. Some of the most common eye conditions that cause red eyes include infections, corneal abrasions, injury, blepharitis, and dry eye syndrome.
There are many other factors that can cause red eyes. For example, red eyes can develop from not blinking enough while staring at your screen devices, loose makeup particles falling into the eye, and corneal ulcers from improper contact lens wear. In worse cases, a red eye can severely develop as inflammation in your eye, indicating acute angle closure glaucoma or cancer. Environmental factors like allergens, smoke, air pollution, dust, or excessive sunlight, can also irritate your eyes. Symptoms frequently associated with red eyes include significant burning, pain, itching, discharge, and increased sensitivity to light.
How does treating Red Eyes benefit your visual health?
Red eyes indicate that there is inflammation in or on the eyes. If left untreated, the inflammation may worsen, causing permanent ocular tissue damage. Prompt diagnosis and management from our Optometrist in Oakland will minimizes the impact on your vision.
What are the benefits of treating your Red Eyes?
There are several benefits of treating your red eyes:
Treat the underlying cause for optimal visual and general health.
Treatments that will be recommended to you will depend on what is causing your red eyes. As part of your examination, your Oakland optometrist will ask questions regarding your general health, lists of medications, lifestyle habits, any chronic and recent events contributing to your red eyes. It is not uncommon that a medication or an underlying systemic condition such as Thyroid disease can cause red eyes. We advise an in-office consultation with our Oakland Optometrist for an evaluation and proper guidance for the treatment of your red eyes.
Reduce annoying symptoms associated with red eyes.
We can all probably agree that red eyes are not the most appealing in appearance. Unfortunately, red eyes are associated with a host of other uncomfortable symptoms like sensitivity to light, blurry vision, and tired, fatigued eyes, and ocular irritation with contact lens wear that can make it difficult for you to function and maintain clear vision throughout the day.
Prevent permanent damage to your eyes.
A red eye is an indicator of inflammation. Chronic inflammation of the eye can lead to potential irreversible scarring or tissue damage.
